DEVON'S STORY This below is the "life" of Devon, it is not meant to "gross" anyone out or make you uncomfortable (I understand it has made some upset that I would write such awful stuff about a little child) Well this is real and in our daily lives, so deal with it or don't read this. Updates will be dated in red. Baby Devon is my youngest grandson, my youngest daughter's youngest child. He is the most adorable baby you could ask for. Always happy and with a quick smile for everyone. We now know Devon has what is called Ontogenesis Imperfecta ( Brittle Bone disease). We believe it is the type 2, that is the better of the 4 types. We do believe that Devon will walk. He may be physically slower then average, but mentally is average or could be above average. We had thought he had Femoral-Facial Syndrome, that is what Shriners had diagnosed early this year. But after Genetic specialist we now know different. As of Dec. first he no longer has to be hitched up to the monitor that let us know when he stopped breathing. March 5, 2001: Devon has a broken leg, today had it set. He has brittle bone disease. Today was his first broken bone, and today is his momma's Birthday . . . Gee . . . Happy Birthday momma! Picture below. May 6, 2001: Devon broke his collar bone this morning. And seeing the ex-rays it was discovered that he had cracked three ribs since the broken leg only 2 months ago. Seem impossible that we didn't know he had but Doctor says yes with Brittle Bone it can happen. So now Devon has a soft brace type contraption on his shoulders/neck. June 7, 2002 Well, here we go again. Devon was ready to be taken out of the bath tub, towel around him and he sat back down. He sat more on his one leg then the other and . . yup, broke the other leg. So back to the hospital and five days later he is now back home with his waist to tippy toe cast on, but the "good" part, he's back in the wheel chair. And he loves that wheel chair. Aug. 26, 2002 Devon is doing great. We came across this web (at the bottom of this page of a young girl with the same disease he has and is now in her early twenties. This is her web address in case you would like to see what this disease is affecting her. We guess we can expect some of the same for our Devon. May 18, 2004 Devon broke his right leg again. (three times for this leg) All he did is turned wrong and went down with broken leg. He had surgery this morning. Cast from waist to ankle. Has his wheel chair back. He almost made it to his fourth birthday (June 16) without a broken bone for the year. Sept. 1, 2004 The X-Ray below is Devon's legs. They put a larger rod in the right femur (May 18). I'm going to make this a short version of what happened. All within a two week period he had both legs in a cast. up to his chest. He has had the cast off about three weeks now. But on Sept. 7 we go back so they can "fix" the right leg's rod, they will hammer it down as it is up in his hip to far. He is unable to walk as it is. They will also put a larger rod in the left leg. Then back home with that awful full cast on again both legs up to his chest. We still can't get over how strong and brave he is for a 4 year old! As you may remember his femur bones were in the shape of an "S" when he was born. They have gotten pretty straight in the past 4 years.
